We can also help you find relatives or friends who are buried in our cemeteries. We provide free help and support on all aspects of bereavement and are available to advise in person, by letter, by telephone or by email. We have graves available in woodland, lawn, traditional and public areas and we also have different options for the burial of ashes (cremated remains). We have a wide range of options for burial irrespective of faith. Most importantly they are the final resting place of our loved ones and a source of solace for the bereaved. Cemeteries have an important role as an environmental resource. Our servicesĬemeteries play a vital role in the grieving process they are also an important part of our heritage and a valuable source of architectural, historical and cultural information. These measures are backed by advice from the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management. Mourners are also asked to observe guidance around social distancing and remain at least 2m apart.The council is also discouraging hand shaking between ministers, celebrants, funeral directors and mourners in line with government advice.However, some simple steps, such as an online donation page, rather than a charity donation box, can reduce the risk of infection. Officers will keep areas as clean as possible.Families may want to consider an outdoor service at the graveside.Older people, those with medical conditions or pregnant women, are also recommended to not attend funerals at this time. Whilst the council recognises this may be upsetting, it is to reduce the risk of infection to others. The council kindly asks that anyone who is showing symptoms or is self-isolating, should avoid attending the funeral.Contact is likely to be made by phone to reduce the risk of infection. Family members will be contacted before the funeral usually by the funeral director, to establish if anyone is suffering from the symptoms of coronavirus or are self-isolating.Other measures the council has introduced include: Funerals can continue to go ahead, however the advice is that only immediate family members should attend. The government has introduced stricter measures on social distancing and what activities are allowed to continue. We have had to introduce small changes to how funerals are carried out due to the risks from coronavirus. We understand that it can be difficult to make decisions about burials and we aim to make this as easy as possible for the bereaved.
